Armed Police Forces (APF)
The Armed Police Force,
Nepal, established in 2001, is a paramilitary land force that operates in a
dual capacity as both a military and law enforcement entity. Initially formed
with 15,000 personnel, it was designed to combat the escalating "People's
War" initiated by the Maoist Communist Party of Nepal in 1996. The force
has played a crucial role in counterinsurgency operations and maintaining peace
and security within the country. The creation of the Armed Police Force was
prompted by the need for an independent police force due to the intensifying
conflict. Led by its first chief, Krishna Mohan Shrestha, the force is governed
by the command structure outlined in Nepal's constitution. The Inspector
General of the Armed Police Force holds a rank equivalent to a three-star
Lieutenant General in the Nepal Army. With its motto of "Peace, Security,
Commitment," the force has been instrumental in responding to the evolving
security challenges faced by Nepal.
